A few a months ago, The National Nuclear Agency of Indonesia (BATAN) announced a plan to build a nuclear power plant in Bangka Belitung Island. Indonesia nuclear power plant will generate 18.000 MW of electricity. There are many benefits for Indonesia to have a nuclear power plant, but it is not feasible to have them at this moment. Indonesia shouldn’t build nuclear power plant due to the fact that the number of Indonesian human resources is not sufficient to operate nuclear power, Indonesia’s level of mastery in science and technology is not suffiecient enough to operate nuclear power plants, and to operate nuclear power plant technology is very difficult and requires high cost
Firstly, Indonesia human resources are not ready to operate nuclear power plants. To operate nuclear power plants, indonesia must have many experts on nuclear technology. As we know, Indonesia has BATAN, a national nuclear agency which employs nuclear experts for the purpose of establishing an organization to develop Indonesian nuclear power plants. Because of the small number of indonesian nuclear experts it’s too risky to operate and develope nuclear power plant as human resources is the most important requireemnt in operating and developing nuclear power plants.The Institut Technology of Bandung (ITB) until 2011 has only twenty Doctor of Nuclear Technology and The number of indonesia nuclear experts is approximately only Hundreds of People,it’s a small number if we compare with number of Indonesian people in 2011 approximately 237.000.000 (Two Hundred Thirty-seven Million).
Secondly, Indonesia’s level of mastery in science and technology is no sufficient enough to operate nuclear power palnts. As we know, United States of America (USA) is the first country to operate nuclear power plants.USA operated the first nuclear power plant on 20 december 1951 If we are to compare Indonsia and america mastery of technolgy it’s verry different especially from science and technology. From science and technology, Indonesian people are still beginners in nuclear technology while American people is the expert for that subject.For Example In Indonesia only fourteen there are only, one them is Institute Technology of Bandung, University of Indonesia, and Batan Nuclear collage.
Finally, To Operate Nuclear Power Plant is verry dificult and consume high cost. Based On Data, to operate nuclear power plant technology is very difficult and consume high cost approximately RP 159 billion (one hundred and fifty-nine billion Rupiah),that cost will be used for the purpose of nuclear power plant feasibility study for 3 years). In 2016, Research and Technology Minister Kusmayanto Kadiman had described plant to build up to four nuclear power plants each with a capacity between 1.000 MW and 1.500 MW,on the northrn coast of central java goverment will be building nuclear power plants. It will requires of high cost approximately US $ 1,5 billion.
In conclusion building nuclear power plant in Indonesia may be a good idea but it is better be postponed because of the lack of experts in this nuclear tehnology, the lack in the level of mastery in nuclear technology, and to operate Nuclear Power Plant is verry dificult and requires high cost. Based On Data, to operate nuclear power plant technology is very difficult and requirea high cost. Nuclear power plant is the last option to provide electricity because there are still other alternatives to generate electiricity. Last but not least, human lives are too precious to be exchanged with nuclear power plants.Justice for all
